Reflecting on My Experience

As a relationship counsellor with nearly a decade of experience, I’ve worked with couples in all stages of their relationship—from those just starting out and wanting to build a strong foundation to those feeling stuck and unsure if they can make it work. Over the years, I’ve seen one key characteristic make all the difference in whether a couple thrives or struggles: willingness.

Key Insight

The most valuable quality in a marriage partner isn’t just compatibility, shared interests, or even love. It’s willingness—the willingness to listen, reflect, and grow together. Couples who are open to feedback, willing to work on themselves, and committed to improving their relationship see progress so much faster than those who resist change.

The strongest relationships aren’t built on never having problems. They’re built on two people who are willing to face challenges together, adapt, and put in the effort to make things better before resentment takes hold.

Personal Experience

One couple I worked with had been struggling for years, stuck in patterns of miscommunication and unresolved frustration. They loved each other, but every conversation seemed to turn into an argument. The real shift happened when they both made the decision to approach their relationship with a willingness to change. Instead of waiting for the other person to “fix” things, they each took ownership of their role in the dynamic. By making small, intentional shifts in how they communicated, they started to see real progress. Over time, their connection deepened, and they were able to break free from the cycle of frustration that had been holding them back.
