Couples counselling is a powerful tool for improving communication, resolving conflict, and strengthening your relationship. Whether you’re facing challenges or just want to feel more connected, knowing what to expect from therapy can help you approach it with confidence and clarity.

Therapies Used in Couples Counselling

In couples counselling, I use a variety of approaches, including the Gottman Method and the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy.

The Gottman Method is based on research and focuses on practical skills that can improve your relationship. It helps you communicate better, resolve conflict, and repair damage in healthy ways. These techniques are simple and easy to use, even for couples new to therapy.

The Developmental Model of Couples Therapy looks at where each partner might feel “stuck” and identifies changes that need to happen for both personal and relationship growth. This approach works for couples at any stage of their relationship, whether you’ve been together for a few years or many. When combined, these methods give couples a toolkit tailored to their unique needs.

What to Expect in a Couples Counselling Session

In our first session, I’ll work with you to understand your relationship’s history, identify strengths, and figure out the areas you want to improve. A fun exercise I often use is having each partner guess the other’s top three complaints about them—this can help open up conversations without blame or defensiveness.

As we move forward, the sessions will focus on tackling specific challenges based on your goals. You’ll get to choose what to focus on, and I’ll guide the conversation while suggesting techniques or tools to help address what matters most to you. Whether it’s managing triggers that lead to arguments, practicing calming techniques during disagreements, or rebuilding trust, each session will provide valuable strategies to improve your relationship both now and in the future.

How to Get the Most Out of Couples Counselling

To see real progress, it’s important to stay committed to regular sessions. Meeting every two weeks at first helps build momentum and keeps small issues from turning into bigger ones. Between sessions, I might give you homework—like practicing new communication skills or thinking about the positive changes you’re seeing. Doing this homework can help you get the most out of our time together.

Couples who actively engage in therapy—by tracking challenges, bringing up issues, and being open to new ideas—tend to grow the most. The more you put into the process, the more you’ll get out of it, creating lasting, positive changes in your relationship.
